The Heart of the Habs: Brendan Gallagher’s Masterclass in 2nd & 3rd Effort

By Enio Sacilotto,

When evaluating the Montreal Canadiens’ recent progression, it’s easy to fixate on the young core. The spotlight naturally gravitates toward the dynamic development of players like Cole Caufield. But there’s a massive piece of the Canadiens’ puzzle that deserves just as much attention: the relentless, unbelievable hockey currently being played by veteran Brendan Gallagher.

Gallagher already has six goals to his name this season, a fantastic milestone that proves he still has the offensive touch. But anyone who watches Montreal knows that the stat sheet only tells a fraction of his story. To truly understand Gallagher’s value to this young, rebuilding roster, you have to look at his second and third efforts.

The On-Ice Warrior: All Business, All Grit

Between the boards, Gallagher is all business. He is the ultimate “dog on a bone,” leading by example through sheer determination and an unmatched work ethic.

His playstyle is a nightly masterclass in grit. A perfect encapsulation of this came recently against the Philadelphia Flyers. During the play, Gallagher took a heavy cross-check and was knocked flat onto the ice. In today’s NHL, many players would stay down, looking toward the referee with their hands up in hopes of drawing a penalty.

Not Gallagher. He immediately scrambled to his feet, completely ignored the lack of a call, and sprinted straight to the blue paint. His reward? A beautiful fly-by tip-in for a goal. It’s exactly the kind of blue-collar, high-traffic goal he has built his career on. He gets knocked down, he gets right back up, and he scores.

The Off-Ice Veteran: Keeping it Light

What makes Gallagher such an invaluable asset to head coach Martin St. Louis isn’t just his on-ice tenacity; it’s how perfectly he balances it with his off-ice demeanor. With a locker room full of young players navigating the pressures of the NHL, Gallagher knows exactly when to relieve the tension.

A recent story from a summer training camp perfectly captures this dynamic. Former NHLer and analyst Kevin Bieksa was running a one-on-one drill for a group of about 20 NHL players, mostly young defensemen. Bieksa pulled the defensemen to the middle of the ice to give them some technical pointers.

Watching from the corner, Gallagher couldn’t resist chirping. “Hey Kev, let the kids breathe a little bit,” he yelled out, keeping the mood light and joking around.

But the punchline came a few minutes later. After the drill resumed, Gallagher skated up to Bieksa and asked, “What did you tell those D? I just beat that guy clean. I haven’t beat a guy in a one-on-one in eight years.”

The Standard-Setter

That self-deprecating humor and willingness to keep things loose is the hallmark of a great veteran. He knows how to give the coaches a hard time, bring a smile to his younger teammates’ faces, and keep the locker room atmosphere from getting too tight.

But the moment the puck drops, the jokes stop. For Martin St. Louis and the Montreal Canadiens, Brendan Gallagher is the perfect duality: a lighthearted veteran in the room, and an absolute warrior in the crease.
